Mental health
Mental health initiatives are crucial because the pressures of academic life, coupled with personal and societal stressors, are taking a significant toll on students' well-being. Having been in the UNC system for the past four years, I have witnessed the mental health crises that are detrimental so many college students. While we are fortunate to have many resources at our disposal here at NCSU, it can be difficult for students, especially first-year students, to know where and how to access these resources. I would like to make sure that awareness campaigns occur throughout the year, and not just at orientation, to keep the conversation going about mental health. Currently I would hope to advocate for Student Government to advertise campus resources and to advocate for expansion of these resources through increased funding.
Campus Safety
Campus safety is vital to the entire NC State community. As most first-years live on campus, campus safety is pertinent to us 24/7. I am committed to advocating for safety measures that are proactive and responsive to our needs. Campus safety plans must be effectively communicated to the student body and allow for students to submit specific questions and concerns. Living in a major city on a public campus, we also need opportunities to learn strategies to avoid or escape dangerous situations. This potentially life-saving knowledge, and recalling this information in a tense situation, is an important skill. I will speak up for increased optional defense training, work to expand resources providing safety tips, and make sure resources are well-advertised and easily accessible. We are all safer when we are well-informed and work together.
Student Organizations
Supporting student organizations is an essential part of cultivating a strong and spirited campus community. Student clubs and organizations provide students with avenues to connect with people of similar backgrounds and interests, as well as a chance to explore new experiences. I will advocate for the resources and support that our campus student organizations need in order to grow and flourish.
Communication
Communication is a key component of effective representation. To me, being a leader is not about making my voice heard, it is about using my position to provide ways for your voice to be heard. I want to make myself available to you! Town Hall forums, office hours, and online surveys are a few ways I plan to ensure I am hearing your concerns and lifting you up.
Arts Advocacy
A vibrant arts scene is essential to a well-rounded community. As an artist, I can attest to the importance of art in society - as a mode of expression and a catalyst for change. The recent elimination of the minor in Theatre at NC State has impacted current and incoming students who had hoped to diversify their course load and pursue their passion.
I seek to ensure that our arts programs on campus are supported, celebrated, and developed. As a senator, I would use my platform to highlight upcoming arts events, performances, classes, and activities to ensure the student body is aware of and can connect with the arts on campus. From the Craft Center to stage performances, NC State Arts initiatives provide balance, enrichment, entertainment, and value to our campus.
